The new lifestyle aparthotel blends historical charm with modern design
Locke, the lifestyle aparthotel brand, has expanded into Portugal with the opening of Locke de Santa Joana in Lisbon. The brand’s largest property to date is set in a heritage former convent dating back to the 1600s, near the iconic Avenida da Liberdade in the city’s vibrant centre.
Locke de Santa Joana features 370 design-led rooms spread over nine floors, including apartments, hotel rooms, penthouses, and suites. Renowned interior design studios Lázaro Rosa-Violán and Post Company have executed the hotel’s design.
The transformation involved restoring the 17th-century convent and integrating it with a contemporary, purpose-built hotel, blending old and new seamlessly. The public areas of the hotel draw inspiration from the convent’s history, with each social space reflecting its distinct character.
Locke de Santa Joana’s rooms celebrate culture and art. Interiors combine historic architectural fragments with contemporary comforts in natural tones and tactile materials. Local fabrics, ceramics, and stone finishes are used throughout, complemented by modern lighting and bespoke furniture. Each unit is equipped with a fully fitted kitchen, offering guests a homely experience while staying connected to the city’s modern evolution.
The hotel also offers extensive amenities, including a co-working space, meeting and event spaces, a large gym and workout studio, and an expansive terrace and courtyard with an outdoor pool. An onsite museum features historical artefacts discovered during the hotel’s restoration, providing guests with a unique cultural experience.
Locke de Santa Joana’s food and beverage offerings are likely to be a major attraction. In partnership with White Rabbit Projects and Spiritland, the hotel boasts several new dining venues. Santa Marta, the hotel’s all-day dining restaurant, offers a menu inspired by the diverse flavours of the southern Mediterranean. Café Castro’s, a relaxed café and co-working space, serves a range of pastries, sandwiches, and beverages.
The second phase, set to open in autumn 2024, will introduce Spiritland, a subterranean music-led space, The Kissaten, a whisky bar, and O Pequeno, an intimate Champagne and martini bar. Completing the food and beverage offerings, Santa Joana, a Portuguese brasserie, will open in partnership with an internationally renowned chef.
