Bullo River Station’s rooms and homestead to undergo transformation

The extensive renovation of the Northern Territory property’s guest wing and homestead will take place in 2026 during a temporary pause of operations, with the reopening scheduled for 2027

Bullo River Station has announced plans for an ambitious redevelopment, with works set to transform the iconic Northern Territory homestead and guest wing in 2026. To accommodate this extensive project, the station will pause its guest operations for the entire 2026 season, reopening in May 2027. The 2025 season will run as usual, welcoming visitors to the seasonal Luxury Lodges of Australia property from April to September.

The vision for Bullo’s redevelopment will be shaped by Australian architecture firm MJA Studio, working in close collaboration with interior designer Sibella Court, who previously lent her expertise to the homestead’s 2018 refurbishment. Together, they will bring a sensitive and contemporary perspective to this outback property, ensuring its rich heritage is honoured while elevating the guest experience.

“After several years of major investment in the pastoral infrastructure and in the significant conservation work undertaken with our conservation partner, the Australian Wildlife Conservancy, we are now embarking on a redevelopment of the homestead and guest wing, the heart of the property,” stated Alexandra and Julian Burt, co-owners of Bullo River Station. “This is no small challenge, given the well-known history of these buildings and the memories that have been created in them over the decades. Our ambition is to honour that extraordinary legacy by re-creating the Bullo River homestead with all its most recognisable features, accompanied by new guest and team spaces, all designed to enhance the overall experience.”

Key updates will include larger guest rooms and the introduction of a new two-bedroom family suite. Signature features such as the swimming pool, firepit and guest lounges will remain at the centre of outdoor relaxation, complemented by new landscaping to enhance the sense of connection with the natural environment. Sustainability will be a primary focus, with designs aimed at improving energy efficiency, reducing cooling needs and increasing water capture and solar power generation capabilities.

Throughout the redevelopment, Bullo River Station will continue its operations as a working cattle station, with its partnership and conservation efforts alongside the Australian Wildlife Conservancy remaining uninterrupted.

“Welcoming guests to our home in the outback has brought us immense joy since becoming the custodians of Bullo River Station in 2017,” said Alexandra and Julian. “The experience of being on this breathtaking property has resonated with people in ways we could never have imagined, and their wonder and support have encouraged us even more to shore up the future of this most remarkable Australian gem.”

Reservations are open for the 2025 season now, with details for 2027 reservations to be shared in due course.
