How to spend a weekend in the “Pearl of the Atlantic”: Madeira

Madeira Island
When exploring a destination for the first time, there’s no better travel guide than a local. Madeiran and Chief Commercial Officer of luxury hotel group, Savoy Signature, Ricardo Madias-Farinha, shares how to spend the perfect weekend in this beautiful yet often forgotten destination
Don’t know anything about Madeira? Or perhaps you’ve never even heard of it? You’re not alone. This under-the-radar archipelago nestled in the Atlantic Ocean off the northwest coast of Africa, is actually an autonomous region of Portugal. Sometimes referred to as the “Pearl of the Atlantic”, Europeans know it for its stunning natural beauty, vibrant culture, and welcoming atmosphere – and it’s about time Australians did, too.
On Madeira’s four islands you can expect dramatic volcanic landscapes, striking coastlines, lush botanic gardens and forests teeming with life, including Laurisilva Forest – a UNESCO World Heritage Site that’s home to rare flora and fauna. It also boasts a fascinating history (Madeira was a vital stopover for ships during the Age of Exploration and is globally renowned for its Madeira wine, first developed in the 15th century), world-class festivals, delicious cuisine and a subtropical climate offering spring-like weather year-round.

So beautiful is Madeira, that those in-the-know liken it to the Amalfi Coast – without the crowds. “Madeira’s breathtaking landscapes, mild climate, and rich cultural heritage make it an extraordinary place to visit,” says born and bred Madeiran Ricardo Madias-Farinha, Chief Commercial Officer of Savoy Signature – a family-owned-and-operated collection of seven hotels and resorts, located on Madeira. “It’s an island where one can fully immerse in nature, exploring everything from dense forests to stunning coastlines. The warmth of the Madeiran people, combined with the island’s culinary delights, creates a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure that’s hard to find elsewhere.”
Having spent his whole life in Madeira, Ricardo is a trusted source on how to make the most of a visit to this unique destination. Below, he shares his recommendations for how to spend a weekend in magnetic Madeira.

Day 1: Explore Funchal
“Start the morning with a delightful breakfast experience at Pico do Areeiro, one of the highest peaks on the island. The hotel teams from our properties – The Reserve, Savoy Palace, or Saccharum – prepare a fantastic breakfast above the clouds. The spectacular views set a magical tone for the day.
“Next, visit Funchal’s old town. Wander down its charming cobblestone streets and admire the unique Art of Open Doors project, where local artists have transformed doorways into captivating artworks. Then take the cable car to Monte and once up there, enjoy a specialty coffee drink with panoramic views before visiting Monte Palace. Go down in the wicker toboggan, an iconic Madeiran experience that promises plenty of fun and excitement as you zoom down the hillside.
“For a more leisurely afternoon, treat yourself to some spa time. The lavish spa and rooftop pool at Savoy Palace offers the perfect way to relax and soak up the island’s beauty.”

Day 2: Adventure Awaits
“Explore Madeira´s famed Levadas, traditional irrigation channels that offer a range of hiking trails through lush forests, leading to magnificent waterfalls and panoramic views, showcasing Madeira´s lush interior. Out at sea, there are heaps of options, from whale and dolphin watching to all sorts of water sports.
“To end the day, visit a local wine cellar to sample the island’s famous Madeira wine, a rich experience offered by our hotels and the perfect way to wind down your adventure. There, you can savour the rich flavours that the region is famous for.”
