Four of the world’s most luxurious exclusive-use private islands

Ever dreamed of hiring out your own private island? Here are four of the most luxurious private island resorts, plus one Australian island that recently opened for exclusive-use stays.

Voavah by Four Seasons, Baa Atoll

Maldives

Size: 5 acres

Sleeps: Up to 14

Rates: From about US$46,000 (about A$62,322) per night plus all-inclusive customised meal plan starting at $305 per person per day.

The living area

Voavah is a tiny 5-acre, exclusive-use island nestled in the world’s only UNESCO biosphere reserve, home to reef sharks, fish, turtles and mantas. Guests arrive by seaplane, before settling into one of the seven bedrooms spread across 3 suites and villas. The island features a PADI- 5 Star Dive Centre, Beach House with a library and gym, a spa and, best of all, exclusive use of a 19-metre private luxury yacht at no extra cost. A range of bespoke experiences are available including dining on a sandbank; sunset cocktails on board the resort’s private yacht, Voavah Summer, where you can catch your own sashimi; beach parties; themed dining; or flying in your own entertainment for a private party.

Necker Island

British Virgin Islands

Size: 74 acres

Sleeps: Up to 34 adults plus six children

Rates: From US$60,000 (about A$64,827) per night.

The view from the bedroom

Arguably the most famous private island in the world, Necker is Sir Richard Branson’s personal playground. The Great House has been completely rebuilt after it burned down and the deck is once again stocked with hammocks, daybeds and pillows. There’s a huge swimming pool with a swim up bar and an aqua trampoline anchored to the floor off the Main Beach. You can also play on the Necker Nymph, a three-person aero submarine that takes you down to 30 metres.

Motu Teta

French Polynesia

Size: Nine acres

Sleeps: Up to six

Rates: From €533 (about A$787) per person per night for six guests to €1,300 (about A$1,919) per person per night for two guests plus taxes.

The island

It’s the ultimate in barefoot luxury at this breezy beach house on an island in French Polynesia’s remote Rangiroa Archipelago. Try your hand at outrigger canoeing with one of the local guides or just take a (swimsuit optional) dip in the crystal clear lagoon. The chef will cook relaxed meals of freshly caught fish to be served on the deck of the main house, or you can take your breakfast by the beach.

Picnic Island

Tasmania

Sleeps: Up to 10

Rates: A$1200 per night

The living room

Australia’s very own exclusive-use private island opened to guests earlier this year. Just a 10-minute boat trip from Coles Bay, the island’s lodge was designed by Tasmanian architect John Latham and offers 360-degree views over the Hazards granite mountain range and the surrounding ocean. Guests can observe the abundant local penguin colony, as well as the sea eagles, shearwaters, dolphins, seals and whales that surround the property. The island is self-contained and is not serviced, although guests are welcome to bring their own staff.
