Marriott Continues Rapid Expansion With 200 Hotels to Open

At least 30 of the new properties will fall under the company’s luxury brands

Marriott International has revealed it has over 200 hotels currently in development, with 30 luxury properties set to open over the next year.

The rapidly expanding company currently has hotels in 60 countries under its various brands, which include Ritz-Carlton, Ritz-Carlton Reserve, St. Regis, W, The Luxury Collection, EDITION, JW Marriott and Bulgari, and will move into an additional 20 countries through its new properties that are being developed.

Ritz-Carlton will celebrate the opening of its 100th property in the year ahead with six openings anticipated and its debut in Perth marking the prestigious brand’s return to Australia. Ritz-Carltons will also be opening in China, Morocco, Dar es Salam and Mexico, among others, while the brand’s Central Park, New York property will be completing a major renovation.

The inaugural voyage of the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection is scheduled for February 2020.

A major chunk of Marriott’s stake, the St. Regis brand currently offers more than 40 hotels in 20 countries and territories. The St. Regis Rome was recently renovated and the St. Regis Zhuhai in China recently opened. Future openings for the brand include its debut in Hong Kong, with designs by the award-winning André Fu (who also designed Hong Kong’s esteemed The Upper House); a central location in Venice, Italy and an opening in trending Cairo, Egypt.

Last year the quirky, youthful W brand was reintroduced to Australia and hotels opened in Amman and Costa Rica. Eight W hotels are currently in the works for 2019, including sites in Aspen, Ibiza, Muscat and Melbourne, with rumours circulating about a Sydney property in the next few years. With multi-million-dollar renovations either planned or underway, the W will also be updating more than half its North American hotels – their Washington D.C. and San Francisco, California locations being among the many.

In 2018, the petite EDITION brand doubled from four properties to eight with openings in Shanghai, Bodrum, Barcelona and Abu Dhabi. EDITION also recently opened in New York City’s Times Square and a West Hollywood location will be arriving this year.

A rapidly-growing ensemble of 110 hotels, the Luxury Collection alone occupies more than 30 countries and territories around the world. In 2018, the title debuted in Savannah, Georgia; Paris, France; and Los Cabos, Mexico. An additional nine properties for this year in locations including Okinawa, Cesme, Buckinghamshire and Budapest are currently in the works.

JW Marriott, which currently consists of 84 hotels and resorts in nearly 30 countries and territories, also has several hotel launches to follow including the Maldives, Shanghai and Savannah, Georgia (USA).
